Abbey of Fontenay

43 km/45 min
Situated several kilometres from Montbard, the Abbey of Fontenay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the historical treasures of the Côte d’Or.

Founded in the 12th century by Saint Bernard, it is one of the oldest Cistercian monasteries and bears witness to the importance and the spread of the Cistercian order in mediaeval Europe.

You can visit year-round to admire this jewel of extremely well-preserved Romanesque architecture: only the refectory has been demolished. Cultural events are scheduled every summer.

The Abbey of Fontenay, only 45 kilometres from the Tour de Giry, is a place to be visited whether you’re seven or 77!

The Butte de Thil

6 km/10 min
Very close to our château-farm you can discover with friends or family the vestiges of the mediaeval castle built atop this butte of 440 metres which dominates our valley.

You will be astounded by the uninterrupted view on the lush hills of the Côte d’Or and the beautiful Morvan Regional Park.

The current owners of the Château de Thil have taken to heart the preservation of this trace of the region’s past and offer pleasant visits of their property.

During the summer, mediaeval entertainment brings the château to life: if you have the opportunity, don’t miss the Château de Thil’s mediaeval festival the 3rd weekend of August!

Flavigny-sur-Ozerain

33 km/38 min
The magnificent village of Flavigny-sur-Ozerain, combining romance and gourmet delights, is well worth a visit, with its picturesque town centre, the setting for the hit film Chocolat, and its ancestral aniseed sweet factory housed in the former abbey. It also has museums and numerous surrounding castles dating from different periods.

But the surrounding area is also ideal for visiting estates and vineyards: wine tourism is another enjoyable way to discover a region, especially a wine-growing region such as Bourgogne-Franche-Comté.

Let yourself be carried away by this subtle blend of history and viticulture.

Alise-Sainte-Reine and the site of Alésia

36 km/40 min

The main attraction of this small town in the Côte d’Or is without doubt the museum-park of Alésia.

Remembered as the place of Vercingetorix’s defeat by Caesar and symbol of the annexation of rebel Gaul to the Roman Empire, this site has long been the subject of myth and fantasy.

Visiting the museum-park is a fun and interesting way of connecting with this highlight of our history.
